Microsoft pulling back on Xbox 360 backwards compatibility support
When Microsoft was gearing up to release the Xbox 360, one of the biggest questions was whether or not the console will feature backwards compatibility of Xbox games. While it took Microsoft quite some time to make the announcement, Mortal Kombat: Deception was on the initial list of games to be backwards compatible and playable on the Xbox 360.
Unfortunately, the emulation was extremely buggy as featured in our Xbox 360 Exposed feature, which subsequently caused the game to be pulled from the list the month following the Xbox 360 release.
However, no news has been released on when Mortal Kombat: Deception is going to be returned to the compatibility list and it may look like may never make its return. Peter Moore, Corporate VP of Microsoft's gaming interests, mentioned that "nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility" in an interview with Kikizo Games. Moore also mentioned that Microsoft has actually "under promised and over delivered" on the backwards compatibility front for the Xbox 360.
It's a very complicated thing... very complex work. I'm just stunned that we have hundreds of games that are backwards compatible."
He added: "more are coming, but at some point, you just go, there's enough, let's move on, or people aren't as worried about a game being backwards compatible - and I like to think we've upheld our end of the bargain in making at least two or maybe three hundred games backwards compat."
It appears that Microsoft is no longer focusing on backward compatibility with the Xbox 360 and it might well mean that a slim number of newly released Xbox games will make it over on the Xbox 360.
